JUDGE FOR THE 5th ANNUAL COMPETITION - Mrs. Faith Flaherty, O.P. has entered the OPrize for Poetry since its beginning. She’s a graduate of the OPrize for Poetry’s online seminar, “Sharing the Fruits,” and she also contributed the last chapter to The Preacher Poet, by Robert Curtis, O.P.L.. Since winning First Prize in OPrize for Poetry in 2007 and 2008, Faith has agreed to be a judge. Faith has a BA in history, with a minor in English. Presently, she is a member of the Lay Fraternities of Saint Dominic in Saint Joseph’s Province, Our Lady of Mercy Chapter, in MCI Norfolk, MA/Trenton, NJ. This chapter is located inside a men’s prison. The chapter members consist of inmates who have found Christ and have been transformed by His love. They are concrete evidence of redemption. Faith’s poetry often reflects the brokenness of life that she has witnessed. Presently, Faith is the secretary of Our Lady of Mercy Chapter and a delegate to the Regional Council. She is also the editor of eLumen, the internet newsletter of the province of St. Joseph, www.3op.org/newsletter.php Poetry has always fascinated Faith. Words, and the way they come together to express ideas have occupied not a little space in Faith’s world. She enjoys experimenting with different forms of poetry the way some people relish crossword puzzles, or suduko. Currently, her favorite mode is haibun, but lately writing sestinas has challenged her free style to conform to the strict code of discipline that a sestina demands. Somebody might conclude that Faith is just playing, and rightly so. Faith loves playing with language. And she invites you to come play, too.
